Fostering Terp Success (FTS) is an initiative supporting undergraduate students aged 24 and under who are experiencing homelessness or have a history in foster care. This program offers a network of resources to help students navigate university life, overcome challenges and build a foundation for success.
Program Overview
FTS provides a comprehensive support system, including:
- Personalized Support: Guidance from FTS case managers and campus coaches.
- Workshops: Sessions on meal preparation, financial wellness, career planning and more.
- Mentorship: One-on-one coaching to help navigate university life and build life skills.
- Community Engagement: Access to social events and a supportive peer network.
- Housing Security: Eligibility for year-round on-campus housing, including during breaks.
- Financial Assistance: Potential for end-of-semester stipends for active participation.
FTS is designed for UMD undergraduate students who:
- Are experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity, as defined by the McKinney-Vento Act.
- Have a history of involvement in foster care.

FTS relies on campus coaches to provide guidance, mentorship and support to students. Faculty and staff who become coaches:
- Offer one-on-one mentoring to help students navigate academics and life challenges.
- Assist students in setting goals and connecting to university resources.
- Receive training and ongoing support from the FTS team.
