College can be expensive and managing money can be stressful—whether you’re learning budgeting skills, applying for financial aid or dealing with an unexpected financial challenge. We offer emergency grants, one-on-one financial wellness consultations and connections to financial aid, state tuition waivers and student job opportunities.

Economic Crisis Response Grants

Undergraduate and graduate students who face an unexpected financial emergency can apply for assistance. This grant helps cover short-term crises or serious life events that could otherwise make it difficult to stay enrolled and continue working toward graduation at UMD.

Financial Wellness Consulting & Support

Build your money management skills and boost your financial wellbeing with personal finance education, tools and resources. We offer one-on-one consultations, workshops and guidance on budgeting, debt management, saving and planning for the future to help you make smart financial decisions.

One-On-One Consultations

Meet with our financial wellness coordinator for personalized guidance on making a budget, managing your money or planning for the future.

What We Can Help With

Our consultations and resources cover a range of financial topics, including:

Student Employment Opportunities

Find on-campus job opportunities to help manage expenses and gain work experience.

Financial Aid

The first step to receiving financial aid is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which can qualify you for federal aid like the Pell Grant and UMD institutional aid. Maryland residents who can’t file the FAFSA should complete the MHEC One-App. The priority deadline for both is March 1 for the following academic year.

The Office of Student Financial Aid helps students and families apply for and manage financial assistance. Scholarships and grants often require planning, so start searching at least a year in advance and dedicate regular time to applications.

Scholarships & Grants

UMD students can use Scholarship Universe to find internal and external scholarships and Maryland residents can also apply for Delegate Scholarships and Senatorial Scholarships through their local officials. We encourage students to begin their scholarship search at least a year in advance.

State Tuition Waivers

Students who have experienced homelessness or have been in foster care may be eligible for state tuition waivers to reduce the cost of education.
