Economic Crisis Response Grant

Home Get Help Finances Economic Crisis Response Grant

The Economic Crisis Response Grant provides short-term financial help for students facing an unexpected crisis or emergency that could affect their ability to stay enrolled at UMD.

The grant is meant to cover immediate, one-time needs. Examples include:

  • Emergency housing or food insecurity
  • Unexpected medical or mental health costs not covered by insurance
  • Essential transportation (such as major car repairs)
  • Emergency dependent care
  • Replacement of essential belongings lost, stolen or damaged
  • Travel home due to a family emergency

It is not designed for ongoing bills, recurring expenses or long-term educational costs (i.e., tuition).

Eligibility

You must be a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at least half-time. International students must be enrolled full time and in good visa standing.

To qualify, you’ll need to show that you’re experiencing a financial hardship caused by a sudden, unforeseen crisis.

Grant Amounts and Limits

  • Students can receive one grant per academic year.
  • Students are limited to two total grants during their time at UMD.
  • The lifetime maximum award is $1,500.
  • Awards may be considered taxable income. International students should consult the ISSS website.

The award amount varies depending on your situation and the availability of funds. Because funding is limited, assistance is not guaranteed.

How to Apply

  1. Complete the online application. Be specific about what happened, what support you need and what other options you’ve explored.
  2. Attach supporting documents such as an eviction notice, repair estimate, provider bill or other proof of your situation.
    1. Do not submit bank account or credit card statements, medical appointment confirmation or explanation of benefits (EOBs).
  3. Submit your application. Processing typically takes 7–10 business days.
    1. We review applications on a rolling basis and twice per week during the regular academic year, excluding breaks. Incomplete applications will not be considered, and all decisions are final.

The last day to apply for an Economic Crisis Response Grant for the fall semester is Friday, December 12, 2025. The application process will then close for winter break and reopen for the spring 2026 semester on Monday, January 26, 2026.
